Presentations by ANU staff and students: The Sixth Biennial
Conference of the Korean Studies Association of Australasia (KSAA) took place on 9-10 July 2009 at the
University of Sydney. The theme of our conference was "Global Korea: Old and New"
and a number of staff and students from ANU presented papers. Dr En Young Ahn
presented a paper titled When Was Modernism in Korean Art? and Dr
Lenoid Petrov, along with chairing a number of panels, presented a paper,
The Politics of Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation: 1998-2008.
ANU PhD candidate Dane Alston also gave a presentation on a portion of
his doctoral research into 14th century intellectual Yangch'on Kwon Kun.
Colloquium seminar: Dr Leonid Petrov, ANU, gave
a talk on Thursday 18 June, titled The Politics of Inter-Korean Economic
Cooperation (1998-2008). Dr Petrov's seminar was held in FAS Rm W1.21 Baldessin
Precinct Building (level 1) 1pm - 2pm. The abstract for the talk is still available here
Seminar: Associate Professor Hyung-a Kim, Director ANU Australia-Korea Leadership Forum,
delivered a seminar jointly hosted by the Department of Political and
Social Change and the Korea Institute. Her talk, Roh Moo-Hyun's Legacy: What Impact
has it had on South Korea's Miraculous Democracy? was held 3:00 - 4:30 pm,
Tuesday 16 June 2009 in PSC Reading Room, Room 4.27, Level 4, Hedley Bull Centre, ANU.
Presentations by ANU staff and students: Dr Roald Maliangkay and
Phd candidates Ayami Noritake and Dane Alston will be heading to Europe to attend the Association
for Korean Studies in Europe (AKSE) in June. Dr Maliangkay will
presenting a paper titled "Fewer Faces, Breasts and Legs: The Changing
Styles of Korean Film Posters" (abstract),
whilst Mr Alston will be convening a panel on the role of the Confucian
canon in pre-modern Korea and presenting a paper titled "Yangchon Kwon
Kun and the Confucian canon" (abstract). Ayami gave a talk on her PhD research titled Work, Gender and Agency: Self-formation of female dressmakers and street
entrepreneurs in a Seoul marketplace. Also, while in the Amsterdam, Dr Maliangkay gave a talk at the IIAS on 25 June titled "To Be Like a Woman:
Korean Pop Culture and the Image of Male Beauty" (abstract).
Performance and talk: Cho Bak (Pagi Yan) -
One Hundred Years of Zainichi-Korean Experience: Osakan Japanese-Korean 'Pagi-Yan' Singout
The Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies of The Australian
National University hosted a performance by Mr. Cho Bak, an Osaka-based
musician, actor, writer and social activist who is in Australia to
contribute to the ARC Discovery Project 'Music and Modernity in Interwar
Osaka'.
Cho Bak is a second-generation Zainichi Korean (Korean resident in
Japan). In his songwriting, performances and publications, he has
advocated the rights of resident Koreans and other minorities such as
Ainu (the indigenous Ainu people), Burakumin (discriminated groups of
people) and the disabled.
Along with the perfomance, Dr Maliangkay chaired a discussion where Mr Bak
talked about the Korean community in Osaka's
Ikuno Ward (in particular, the enclave that was named Ikaino until
1973), and sang songs that reflect experiences of Koreans in Japan
over the last one hundred years. The main themes of the performance were
peace and reconciliation, and remembering versus forgetting the past.
Mr Cho Bak's performance took place at 1pm-2.30pm, Friday 17
July, at the APCD Lecture Theatre Ground Floor, Hedley Bull Centre
(Building 130). This event was free and open to the public.
- Workshop update: Deadline extension for the Fifth International Workshop on Korean Studies -
The deadline for applications to participate in the Fifth International
Workshop on Korean Studies, sponsored by the Worldwide Consortium of
Korean Studies Centers, has been extended to May 15, 2009. The workshop,
on the theme Korea Coping with Globalization, will be held July 7-10,
2009, at the Center for Korean Studies, University of Hawai'i at Manoa,
Honolulu, Hawai'i, U.S.A.

Seminar by Professor Seok Choon Lew: - Professor Seok Choon Lew from Yonsei University
delivered a talk titled "Did the 1997 Financial Crisis Transform
the Korean Developmental State? Focused on the Public Fund". This seminar,
jointly hosted by the Department of Political and Social Change and Korean
Institute, was held 3:00 - 4:30 pm, Tuesday 19 May 2009 in the
Political and Social Change Reading Room, Room 4.27, Level 4, Hedley

- Keynote by Korean Ambassador: The South Korean Ambassador, H.E. Dr Kim Woo-sang, delivered an "Asian security seminar"
on Thursday 14 May from 2.00-3.30pm. The seminar was entitled "Korea's security in the Asian century".
It was helded in Lecture Room 1.04, Coombs extension building (Building 8), ANU campus.
